27/03/2006 - International Award for Deuchars:

Now we don’t want to sound boastful, but to be honest, our trophy shelf is pretty heaving what with all of the awards that we have won here at Caley. You may think that we’d be used to getting awards by now, but the opposite is true, we still get an immense feeling of pride when our names are called up to receive an award and the recent lunch of the BFBi (the Brewing, Food & Beverage Industry Suppliers Association) was no exception.

Back, way back in September, we were crowned 'International Cask Conditioned Ale' Champions for Deuchars IPA as well as winning the gold medal in the same category, at the DRINKTEC 2005, World Fair for Beverage Technology in Munich.

We attended the BFBi lunch to collect the award which was presented to us by Paul Charity, the Deputy Editor of the Morning Advertiser.

The Brewing Industry International Awards have been running for 119 years and are judged by currently practising brewers. The judging panel comprised of 30 expert brewers from 17 countries including the UK, Australia, Belgium and Finland with the competition featuring 752 beers from 43 countries.

Few British brewers will ever feel the pride of lifting the historic cask ale trophy once, let alone twice, but our Director of Production, Dr Robert Burton (Dr Bob to us!) now has that honour. Robert previously won the same title in 1994 for Riding Bitter when he was the Head Brewer at Mansfield Brewery.

In addition to winning the International Cask Conditioned Ale category twice, Robert has also previously won the International Lager category twice in 1983 and 1985 for Mansfield’s Marksmen lager.

Our man at the top, Stephen Crawley said of the award: “This is great news for everyone here; it’s a real testament to the consistent quality of the beer, on which we have spent a lot of time, and the dedication of the brewing team. Our congratulations go to Robert, he really does a fantastic job and the fact that he has won this award twice is just outstanding.

"Deuchars is a truly exceptional beer and its growing popularity across the country and its industry accolades are proof of that. It’s good to know that Deuchars is favoured by those with continental taste buds as well!"
